Liberty. Equality. Fraternity. The French Revolution wrote the trinity in three words.
If a nation is a story, a society is the texture of daily life inside it. Three forces braid that texture. Liberty is the truth of the self — the right to act on what you actually believe. Equality is the goodness of the collective — no one's interests count for less. Fraternity is the beauty of belonging — the felt sense that other people are not enemies. A society can survive losing one of these for a while; lose two and it stops being a society.
Liberty is the social pre-condition of truth — without it, no one can say what they actually believe, and the collective hallucinates. It is also the engine of innovation: most discoveries come from outliers who could not be stopped.
Not sameness — equal weight. The moral demand that no person's pain or joy is discounted by birth. Where equality erodes, the nation's law continues but its goodness leaks out.
The hardest of the three. Liberty and equality can be enforced; fraternity must be felt. It is the aesthetic dimension of solidarity — the sense that strangers are kin. Where it is healthy, a society moves like one body.
Three words become the motto of a republic — and a permanent design spec for every society that came after.
After the war, Europe operationalizes equality through social insurance. The goodness axis gets a budget line.
Social media subsidizes liberty (anyone can speak), corrodes fraternity (anyone can hate), and renders equality measurable but ranked.
