The substrate physics first learned to count. Quarks, atoms, molecules — the visible, weighable side of reality. Everything you can touch is matter; almost nothing important about you is.
存在Existence
Matter, information, energy — the three substrates of being.
Every existing thing is some woven combination of three irreducible substrates. Matter is what occupies space. Energy is what changes it. Information is what shapes the change. Physics, biology, computer science, and the long history of cosmology are all stories about how these three substrates exchange one for another. Wherever you see complexity, you are seeing a particular braid of all three.
Shannon's contribution to the trinity: a thing exists in proportion to how much it reduces uncertainty. DNA, language, code, and your memories all live here. The 20th century discovered information is as fundamental as matter.
The currency of physics. Every transformation costs energy; every form of order is energy held in shape. Stars, brains, civilizations — all are energy gradients in disguise.
How this trinity came to be.
- 1905
E = mc²
Einstein collapses matter and energy into one quantity. Two of the three axes become exchangeable.
- 1948
Shannon's bit
The third axis gets its unit. Information becomes a measurable, conserved quantity — and physics gets its third leg.
- 1973
Bekenstein bound
Black hole entropy formula ties matter, energy, and information together in a single inequality. The trinity is one object.
How to use this lens today.
- 01Every engineering problem is, at the limit, a problem of converting between the three. Battery design = energy↔matter. Compression = matter↔information.
- 02Biology: a cell is the most efficient three-way exchanger evolution has ever built.
Where this trinity is heading.
- →Quantum computers compute in the information axis directly, bypassing matter. Energy efficiency may approach the Landauer limit.
- →Synthetic biology rewrites the matter↔information boundary at room temperature.
